Can a fixed bridge or tremolo on my guitar body effect the sound quality?
This is an area of fierce debate within the guitar body area. Generally, it is widely accepted that a fixed bridge guitar body helps increase sustain. Whether or not the tone of the guitar body is improved is harder to prove. Personally, I have found after blocking off the tremolo on a guitar body in the past, there is a perceptual difference in tone along with the more moderate increase in sustain. Dive bomb! Ok, some of my more serious guitars have blocked off tremolos on the guitar body or fixed bridges but sometimes its fun to go a little crazy 80’s style! In this case a good quality floating tremolo for your guitar body is essential. The likes of an original Floyd rose for the guitar body or if not, one of the good quality licensed copies (Ibanez edge and Schaller) should do the trick as long as you remember to regularly maintain them after instalation on to the guitar body.
How do these relate to my guitar body?
Well if you believe the fixed bridge guitar body crowd, your tone and sustain will decrease. But I don’t quite think that argument holds a great deal of weight when you listen to Mr Satriani! The other thing to watch out for is the way the posts are mounted in the guitar body. The amount of guitars I have been presented with over the years that have a cheap Floyd rose copy and cheap guitar body, usually with one thing in common. The posts on which the tremolos were balanced on the guitar body had been pulled out of line. This was a direct result of poor quality wood which was too soft to support the required tension of the strings on the guitar body. When installing a Floyd Rose, ensure the routing on the guitar body allows sufficient room to pull the tremolo to a comfortable degree. The Stratocaster style guitar body usually has a bolt on neck, which makes it easier to change if a part is damaged. There is no right or wrong answer as to which method on the guitar body is better. It depends entirely on what you want, what your budget is and ultimately how it sounds at the end of the day! If you want to build your guitar body yourself then we provide templates for you to download. When choosing the timbres for your guitar body, you might want to look through our range. There is another basic style of guitar body that has not been covered so far. This is the straight through guitar body. This style takes the glued in neck concept one step further by having the neck and the guitar body constructed from one strip of timbre/timbres. Wings are then glued on either side of the guitar body to complete the build. This method of guitar body construction has optimal sustain in mind and is often more expensive for obvious labour intensive reasons.
